Skiing in Spain

skiLocated close to Granada this is Europe's most southerly ski resort and is about a 2 hour drive from the Costa del Sol. It hosted the Skiing World Championships in 1995 and boasts the Iberian peninsula's highest peaks, Mulhacen and Veleta both being approximately 3,500 metres high.

The main resort is the Sol y Nieve. The slopes themselves are extensive and one ski pass gives you access to all parts of the mountain. Difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly to the almost vertical black/mogul slopes for the more professional. The main piste that runs down to the bottom of the mountain where all the hotels can be found is called El Rio and is a wide, peaceful stretch which will help you to rediscover your snow legs if you have spent some time away from the slopes.

During the February Spring break the first weekend is referred to as 'semana blanca' (white week) and on this occasion everyone who has any interest at all in skiing or snow boarding heads to Granada to enjoy a weekend of fun. If you don't have the necessary equipment don't despair because it is possible to buy or rent it at one of the ski stores.

If you visit the Sierra Nevada then you should definitely take a detour to Granada which is only 20 minutes away by car and is an experience well worth giving up a day on the pistes to enjoy. Granada's best-known attraction by far, has to be the Alhambra. The Alhambra isn't just one building but a complex of buildings and their fortifications. Their construction occurred over a long period of time, resulting in some remarkable contrasting architecture styles.

Another important component of the area of Sierra Nevada is its nature reserve which contains many species of plants and animals. You can find out more about this in our Nature and Adventure Section.

Sierra Nevada is a great place to go skiing and its trump card is that the moment the cold gets too much all you have to do is drive down the mountain to the Coast, put on your bathing costume and hit the beach. With this resort it really is possible to have your cake and eat it.
